"The phrase, from the show “Crash Landing on You” can be directly
translated into English as “Are you the general?,” but in the
international release of the series, the official translation renders it
as “Are you a general or what?” Both translations rob the phrase of its
sarcastic nuance, which is more akin to “Who died and made you the
general?” or “You think you’re the general or something?”


Das erinnert mich gleich an Phrasen, die in der DDR so kursierten:

"Aus unseren Betrieben ist noch viel mehr rauszuholen!"
"„30 Jahre DDR – -  30 Jahre Staatszirkus“!"
"Niemand hat die Absicht, eine Mauer zu errichten!"
"Was passiert, wenn in der Sahara der Sozialismus eingeführt wird? Zehn
Jahre überhaupt nichts, und dann wird der Sand knapp."
und dann solche Begriffe wie "Vitamin B", "Bückware",
"Jahresendfiguren"   etc....
