Chennai, Dec 26 (UNI) The city and its suburbs experienced mild but
widespread tremors around 0645 hrs this morning, giving a rude shock to its
residents.

Most residents were asleep when the mild earthquake, which lasted for two to
five seconds, literally shook them awake. In some places, people ran out on
to the streets while reports from other parts of the city and suburbs said
residents sought shelter in various places.

About three hours after the earthquake, there were huge tidal waves in the
Bay of Bengal. At around 0915 hrs, waves swept the Marina, near the light
house here, and sea water, after crossing the Kamarajar Salai, entered the
All India Radio and other premises.

''There is knee deep water at the AIR premises,'' a senior official told
UNI.

The Meteorological office said that they were studying the impact of the
tremors and would give details soon.

The earthquake was spread in the entire east coast and was felt in
Triplicane, Besant Nagar, Tiruvanmayur, Valmiki Nagar and Neelankarai areas.
Suburbs like Ambattur, Poonamallee and Valasaravakkam also experienced the
tremor.

A report from Cuddalore said sea water had entered the coast to an extent of
nearly three kms, causing panic among the residents.

People were seen running out of their homes to places of safety. The sea
water was almost upto the district collectorate, the report added.
A report from Pondicherry said several parts of the city also experienced a
mild tremor this morning. Frightened people ran out of their homes in
several areas.

The tremor was felt at about 0715 hours and lasted only two seconds.
No damage has been reported from any part of the Union Territory so far,
police said.
