CUBA Charley blows off Habana. Hurricane Charley has blown RHC and
relays via Cuba off the air.

We might try RHC's audio streaming, which I have not had much luck with
even during light breezes. There are text stories about the hurricane's
impact on Cuba, headed, of course, by Fidel's version, at
<http://www.radiohc.cu> (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 13)

Don't know what damage the antennas may have suffered, but electricity has
been out in western Cuba [gh, Aug 18]

Cuban bubble jammers are still hitting Marti on 6030 and 7365 too, checked
at 0218 UT Sat. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 14)

I have noticed the absence of Radio Havana
Cuba for the past day or so. I do not find this to be so unusual
considering the Hurricane that went thru Cuba. However I do find it
strange that 1180-AM Radio Rebelde is still going, and the Cuban jamming
of Radio Marti Shortwave still continues. (George Thurman
<rec.radio.shortwave> )

If I had a SW station with a large international audience, and it was
knocked off the air by a disaster, and still off the air five days later,
and yet had internet access, I would feel obliged to say something to the
frustrated listeners about the situation. But then, I'm not RHC.

I checked their website <http://www.radiohc.cu> and found nothing about
the station being off the air, but these nx items may bear on it:

(Aug 16) Three days after Hurricane Charley hit western Cuba, residents
continue cleaning up and working to get all sces re-established throughout
the affected areas. Despite 'round- the-clock efforts by brigades of
workers from other cities and provinces, electrical power in several areas
of Havana has still not been restored.

According to officials, one of the biggest problems has been repairing
high-voltage lines [!!!] that were downed by the hurricane-force winds
near Mariel, located west of the capital. Those lines supplied power to
many neighborhoods in Havana and almost the entire western-most province
of Pinar del Rio. Officials say that another two days are needed to fully
restore power in the affected areas of the capital and crews are working
uninterruptedly in Pinar del Rio. (... excerpted)

Officials report hundreds of downed high tension towers, cables and
transformers which has made it impossible to re-establish electrical sce
to the majority who have been without light, cooking gas and water since
late Thursday night. The city and province of Havana were hardest hit and
the entire province of Pinar del Rio was still without electrical power
and or communications on Saturday.

Hurricane Charley inflicted the most damage on the Havana province towns
of Batabano, Playa Cajio and Bauta, as well as on San Cristobal,
Candelaria and Bahia Honda in Pinar del Rio. The coastal town of Mariel
was also hard hit.

[at Bauta side the RHC HF SW txs are located, wb.]

Hurricane Charley hit the western part of the island with heavy rains and
maximum winds of 165 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 200
kilometers per hour. The hurricane hit the southern coast of Havana
Province near the town of Batabano at 12:15 a.m. with sustained winds
reaching 165 kilometers per hour. As Charley churned toward the capital
city on the northern coast, electricity was purposefully cutoff a
preventive measure to protect people from downed powerlines.

Gusts of wind were clocked at nearly 250 kilometers per hour and the
hurricane moved at a relatively fast pace of 25 kilometers per hour.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Aug 15; excerpt)

The story on the RHC website mentioned that 13 high voltage electrical
towers west of Havana have collapsed from Hurricane Charley, so given how
much electricity SW txs draw I'm not surprised that RHC is off the air
temporarily. According to the story, the province of Pinar del Rio was
still without electricity today, so I'm sure that's the priority.
